Beaufort County Animal Shelter switching to appointment-based visits on Tuesdays and Thursdays
WASHINGTON, N.C. - Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 29, Beaufort County Animal Services will close the shelter to unscheduled public visits on Tuesdays and Thursdays until further notice. On those days, visits will be available by appointment only from 1–5 p.m. Normal walk-in hours will continue on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
This adjustment addresses current staffing challenges, allowing Shelter staff to maintain quality care for on-site animals while giving officers the necessary time to handle field follow-ups. The Shelter’s address is 3931 Highway 264 East, Washington, N.C.
Hours beginning Sept. 29, 2026:
- Tuesdays and Thursdays: No unscheduled walk-in visits will be accommodated. All public visits, including adoptions and owner surrenders, must be scheduled in advance with Animal Service staff. Call 252-946-4517 to schedule an appointment.
- Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays: Normal walk-in hours remain (1–5 p.m.).
- Saturday: Public visits are by appointment only.
To report a dangerous or injured animal during business hours, call 252-946-4517. After business hours, call 911.
Please call before bringing an animal to the shelter. Owner surrenders and stray drop-offs may still be declined when space is not available.
Residents can help by adopting pets, volunteering at the Shelter, or donating supplies, especially kitten food. Adoptable animals are listed on the Animal Services Facebook page and at 24petconnect.com.
