One Dead as UN Food Convoy Bombed in Sudan

(MENAFN) The United Nations reported Friday that a World Food Programme humanitarian convoy was struck by drone fire in Sudan's North Kordofan state, killing at least one person.

Denise Brown, the UN resident coordinator in Sudan, issued a statement expressing alarm over the deadly assault on aid workers.

"I am deeply concerned by a drone attack earlier today on trucks contracted by the WFP in North Kordofan," Brown said.

The vehicles were en route from Kosti transporting critical food supplies destined for displaced families near El Obeid when the aerial strike occurred, resulting in at least one fatality and multiple injuries, she said.

The trucks were traveling from Kosti to deliver life-saving food assistance to displaced families near El Obeid when they were hit, tragically killing at least one person and injuring several others, she said.

"The trucks caught fire, destroying food commodities intended for life-saving humanitarian response," Brown added.

Brown highlighted that this marks the second drone attack on WFP operations this week, following an earlier strike near a facility in Yabus, Blue Nile State, which wounded one staff member.

The UN has repeatedly documented aerial attacks targeting its convoys and those belonging to other international humanitarian organizations operating in Sudan, while vast territories across Darfur and Kordofan regions remain gripped by catastrophic food insecurity.

Sudan has been consumed by armed conflict since mid-April 2023, with the Sudanese Armed Forces battling the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in a war that has killed tens of thousands and forced millions to flee their homes domestically and across borders.
