Attorney General Brenna Bird Announces Win for Iowa Farmers in Case Against Corteva

DES MOINES—Attorney General Brenna Bird today announced a $35 million settlement in a bipartisan multistate case brought with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) against Corteva, Inc. The FTC and states sued Corteva for conducting a loyalty program that violated monopoly laws and illegally limited the sale of generic, less-expensive competing pesticides. Iowa will receive approximately $2.4 million.  

Pesticides reach farmers through distributors and retailers. The FTC and state attorneys general say Corteva’s loyalty programs paid distributors to limit how much they sold of generic and rival manufacturers’ products. That, in turn, raised farmers’ costs because it stifled competition by keeping less expensive generic alternatives off the shelves and permitted Corteva to maintain high prices on its products.   

“This is a great win for Iowa farmers, but also for all Iowans,” said Attorney General Brenna Bird. “Higher input prices for farmers growing our food mean higher prices at the grocery store. Iowa farmers and families deserve a marketplace without inflated prices.”  

The original lawsuit was filed against both Corteva and Syngenta. The case against Syngenta is ongoing, although no trial date has been scheduled. This settlement is separate from the $85 million class action settlement reached in July of 2026 brought by over 100,000 farmers, including Iowans.
