Big, Beautiful Success Story: No Tax on Overtime Pays Off for Americans Who Put in the Extra Hours

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Hourly workers who stay past quitting time are keeping more of their paychecks thanks to No Tax on Overtime, a signature piece of the Working Families Tax Cuts. Members of the Ways and Means Committee are hearing directly from hardworking Americans and job creators about what that extra money means for their families and communities.

Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) issued the following statement:

“Working overtime can mean missed time with family, late dinners, and Saturdays spent on the factory floor instead of at home – from law enforcement officers working extra shifts to protect their neighbors, nurses putting in longer hours to care for their patients, or workers going the extra mile to provide for their families. When a working parent or anyone punching the clock makes that sacrifice, they deserve to keep more of what they earn. That is exactly why Republicans passed No Tax on Overtime in the Working Families Tax Cuts. Every Democrat voted against this relief. The contrast in priorities couldn’t be clearer: when Democrats had unified control of government, they chose tax relief for wealthy environmentalists and tax increases for the middle class through increased IRS audits, while Republicans chose relief for the hardest working Americans. Republicans will keep fighting for the men and women who go the extra mile to build, fix, and serve this country.”

Representative Nathaniel Moran (TX-01) spoke with Harrison County Sheriff BJ Fletcher about how No Tax on Overtime is delivering for the deputies who keep East Texas communities safe:

“I want to talk to you for a minute about the Working Families Tax Cuts. The No Tax on Overtime, my deputies have absolutely taken advantage of that. I’m grateful for this legislation… This bill has been outstanding for police officers, communities, and America as a whole. What’s it do? Safer communities, real relief for our deputies… This bill right here has been absolutely exciting and nothing but great for law enforcement and our communities.”

Representative Adrian Smith (NE-03) spoke with Grant, a nurse in Grand Island, Nebraska, about how No Tax on Overtime is helping address nursing shortages by supporting those who pick up extra shifts:

“Well, as a nurse, we work a ton of overtime, especially with the nursing shortage. Having No Tax on Overtime helps even more, so it helps us to work a little bit more and make a little bit more money, not have to send so much to the government.”

At a Ways and Means Tax Subcommittee hearing in May, the Committee heard from Jason Alexander, a millwright at Optimus Steel in Beaumont, Texas, about how No Tax on Overtime is helping him and his wife as they plan to start a family:

“I’m thankful for the No Tax on Overtime and the Working Families Tax Cuts. It’s blessed me and my family. The benefits from the Working Families tax breaks will help my wife and I start a family, be a nice nest egg… I’m thankful for what the tax breaks have done for me and my family, and I look forward to those tax breaks in the future as well.”

Representative Mike Kelly (PA-16) visited Sprankle’s Market in Saxonburg, Pennsylvania, where owner Doug Sprankle employs 100 people in a town of 1,400. Ways and Means Tax Subcommittee Chairman Kelly said of the Working Families Tax Cuts:

“I think when we look back on it, people, as they realize more and more what the benefits are, they can say, so my overtime, I’m not going to get taxed. No, you’re not going to get taxed.”

Sprankle shared how the same tax cuts allowed him to invest in his store and create new jobs:

“We had the opportunity to own this store back in 2020, during the heart of COVID… It was closed for three years, created a food desert for over 5,000 people… The tax cuts were huge for us. The continuation of over 100% upfront deductions on eligible items allowed us to buy equipment, allowed us to create a better space, therefore, in creating more opportunity for business and more opportunity to hire people. For instance, our coffee shop wouldn’t have been possible without it… so it allows us to invest right now, which helped us basically hire three new people.”
